Bill & Monica movie is all ‘Red One’ and ‘Blue’

Posted by bluedress on September 22nd, 2008

Starring Paula Jones and Matthew Lesko, will The Blue Dress, with a budget of just less than a million dollars, be the independent movie hit of 2009? Filmed with the new Red One camera, The Blue Dress is a non-political comedy about a lonely President Bill Clinton who meets Monica, an intern who is infatuated with him (inspired by the Starr Report). The movie revolves around their secret affair from July 1995 to January 1998, during the Paula Jones lawsuit. The film ends when Matt Drudge, founder of DrudgeReport.com uses the Internet to finally scoop broadcast news of the biggest presidential scandal since Watergate.

Past Independent Film Hits

Juno (2008/2007)

No Country for Old Men (2007)

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Brokeback Mountain(2005)

The Passion of the Christ (2004)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)

Pulp Fiction (1994)

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

The Blue Dress is the first movie project produced by Daniel ‘The Wig Man’ Vovak, 36, a professional writer since 1995, having previously written hundreds of newspaper articles, a couple books, and three screenplays: Redeeming Stella (a true psychological horror about five dead babies found in an attic in Pennsylvania), Unsilent Partner (a comedy about ethical accountants), and Whereabouts Unknown (a drama about a murdered businessmen searching for a missing painting, stolen by Nazis).

Vovak’s marketing ideas for this film include a casting event in Philadelphia in mid-October 2008, using blue carpet for his awards ceremony (instead of red), and possibly selling “foreplay tickets.” We had the chance to briefly interview Vovak over the phone at his home in Bethesda, Maryland.

Question: I just finished watching the teaser trailer for The Blue Dress, and I honestly found it to be hysterical. How did you handle such a taboo subject and still strive for a PG-13 rating?

Answer: Sex can be discussed without making it sleazy: Woody Allen has always written about it in a classy way; Mike Nichols did it with The Graduate, and we’re doing it with The Blue Dress. We’re tackling a highly serious topic and making it humorous.

Q: What is the funniest moment you discovered through your research?

A: When I read Matt Drudge’s book, I learned about how important his cat was for his Internet reporting. It’s like the cat serves as his editor and news advisor. After Lucianne Goldberg called him, releasing Monica’s actual name, the cat responded in a hilarious way. Because of his love of cats, Socks has an important role in the movie, too, which is why he has a cameo appearance in the trailer.

Q: What attracted you to the Bill Clinton story?

A: It is inevitable that President Clinton’s story will ultimately be told as a movie. When I was doing my research, I was shocked that most people under the age of 24 were not aware of Bill and Monica’s story and what actually happened between them. I began asking three questions to people under 24, to which most of them did not have the answers: 1) What happened with the blue dress? 2) What did Bill do with the cigar? and 3) What association is there with Al Gore and the Internet?

Q: Some people think the blue dress topic should be altogether forgotten, so why are you re-exposing it?

A: Let’s be honest about this. Our former president’s answer to whether or not he had sex with Miss Lewinsky, has permanently affected the dialogue of parents and children regarding sexual relations, without kids even realizing it. Dave Clark, who helped with the writing, says, “Mothers, don’t let your daughters grow up to be interns.”

Q: Speaking of Dave Clark, what was it like to write the screenplay with him, as he is a stand-up comedian?

A: We laughed a lot creating this movie, which we hope our audiences will, too. My background is in writing and politics, which is the opposite of Dave’s, which is in comedy and acting. I would set-up the jokes and Dave would deliver the punch lines. There’s been nothing funny about politics since 9/11, so this movie is a much-welcomed relief.

Q: How is it possible to make a high quality film for less than a million dollars?

A: The short answer is that I put together an excellent team. Andy Sparaco, my Director of Photography, and Oak Porcelli, my Line Producer, plan to use two Red One cameras, which is a new technology that looks like film to the untrained eye. Because of it, I have secured some brave first-time investors, who see the obvious profit potential of mixing smart technology with the international name of Bill Clinton. Similar to how actors are moving out of Los Angeles, so is film production. For instance, new film hubs have arisen in Philadelphia, New Mexico, New York City, Austin, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and Florida. My prediction is that first-time investors will become rich in those markets from a number of movie projects, with The Blue Dress being just one example of many.

Q: Before I forget to ask, why do you wear a white wig?

A: Well, since everyone in Hollywood and Washington, D.C. is a “big wig,” wearing the wig fits Bill, plus it attracts the free publicity that independent films absolutely need.

Q: Do you have any predictions for the current presidential election?

A: As far as I’m concerned, Bill Clinton deserves a third term, though just for 106 minutes.
